The First Commandment
Throughout the centuries, countless human hearts have yearned to know God and love Him with more understanding. Many true Christians have felt that by obeying the Commandments and loving Christ Jesus they would be brought nearer to God. But still the ideal of a closer communion with Him has been unattained.
Many who today are students of Christian Science had sought God through long and weary years of suffering, but the search seemed to be in vain until they became familiar with the spiritual interpretation of the Bible through the study of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Through the consecrated and prayerful study of the Bible in the light of this textbook. their consciousness has been so uplifted and purified that they are enabled to free themselves and others from the many ills and misfortunes which seem so real to mankind. They have found that the true God, who is divine Principle, Life, Truth, and Love, and man in His image and likeness are so clearly revealed in Christian Science that they no longer believe the deceitful testimony of the material senses, and are healed.
When we begin to realize that God is the author of good alone, and is never in or of matter, our consciousness approaches the great truth that God is Love, too tender and merciful to send sickness, sin, sorrow, or death upon His beloved children. How much easier it becomes to obey the command, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me," when we learn the true nature of God! Mrs. Eddy says on page 340 of Science and Health: "The First Commandment is my favorite text. It demonstrates Christian Science." We see at once, if to obey the First Commandment "demonstrates Christian Science," how essential it is to begin today to ponder frequently the importance of keeping that Commandment.
