Like many others, I have at various times in my life...
Like many others, I have at various times in my life asked to have God explained. My father taught in our church what was called the "Adult Bible Class," and I always took an active part in church work. Many years later, when walking down the street of a small country town and greatly in need of healing, I suddenly became aware of a Christian Science Reading Room directly across the street, and while I knew nothing about Christian Science, yet I did know that it claimed to heal. I can never be too grateful that I went into that room and asked the librarian to explain Christian Science to me.
After hearing what I had to say, the librarian asked me how many gods I believed in. I had always supposed that I believed in only one God, but through her explanation I was led to see this was very far from being so. When I left the Reading Room I found that I was completely and permanently healed of neuritis, one of my gods, from which I suffered severely. I was able to drive my car home in a heavy downpour over thirteen miles of difficult muddy roads, entirely free from pain and from the paralyzed condition of my arms with which I had entered the Reading Room.
A year later I experienced two more instantaeous healings—removal of the eyeglasses I had worn from childhood and freedom from a very painful carbuncle. After these healings I put my children in the Christian Science Sunday School. I knew the teaching would be different from that given in other Sunday schools, and sometimes I used to wonder how much they were learning. One day when I became very ill with influenza and was unable to move, my young son returned from Sunday school. He came in to inquire how I felt, and quite suddenly he asked if I knew what prayer was. I was about to tell him what it was, remembering the chapter on Prayer in Science and Health, when he went on to say, "Prayer is a closet you get into and shut the door, and you need to dig deeper into the closet and shut the door tighter!" I was entirely free from that trouble in half an hour, and I had also learned that the children in Christian Science Sunday Schools not only learn how to pray, but when to do it.
