How large a part wells play in the lives of people where water is a scarcity! They were important to the Israelites as they wandered in the wilderness. So wells are figuratively important to us as we wander through the wilderness of life, for in them we gain those living waters which do much to smooth the asperities of life and bring that spiritual contentment without which there can be no real happiness.

There are, as we are told in the Scriptures, wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest. ... There are the wells of human kindness, the wells of understanding, ... which create sympathy and ... keep us from being too harsh in our judgment of our fellow creatures. There are the wells, figuratively, which if we only seek for them we can with joy draw water from ... the water which brings mental comfort in creating that frame of mind which gives that happiness which material things ... cannot give. ...
