The acceptance of Christian Science has so enriched my...
The acceptance of Christian Science has so enriched my life and brought me such untold blessings that I am impelled to share my experience with others. Until nine years ago my attitude toward this religion was one of prejudice and resentment. I lived a few blocks from a branch church, and scorned everything connected with the movement.
My religious experience was very dear to me, as for some time I had been a member and worker in an orthodox church and Bible school, and active in evangelistic work. However, I had never thought of God as the healer of the body. All my life I had been a slave to medical treatment, and had received the kindest of care and attention from several members of my family who were physicians. At the time I was divinely led to Christian Science I was employed in a newspaper office, and was much in need of rest and renewed strength. With this end in view I took a short vacation trip to Florida, carrying a heavy load of doubts and fears and various medical remedies for my ills. While staying in the home of friends I picked up a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. I read at random on several occasions, but could never recall what or where I had read. But the grain of truth was sufficient to prepare me for the next step, and when other friends invited me to attend a Wednesday evening meeting in a Christian Science church I gladly accepted. The entire service as well as the testimonies impressed me, and I asked for further information. The woman with whom I talked I had known in my home neighborhood, and as far as I knew she had never had any inclination toward religion. The change in her nature and in the attitude she took toward life was a great surprise to me. Later I was told she was a practitioner. I decided then to try the study of Christian Science as a means of improving my health. The conviction was so definite that this was the real way that I purchased a copy of Science and Health and a Christian Science Quarterly, and before leaving for my home deposited all material remedies in a garbage can.
The testing time came a few months later when I was taken severely ill, but again divine Love prevailed and with the aid of a practitioner I was restored to health. I have never since had any other help for physical or mental needs but Christian Science, and have always found it the only help required. It was made plain to me, when leaving the old paths for the new, that I could not put "new wine into old bottles," so I joined The Mother Church and a branch church, and it has been a growing inspiration to be present at the services and take part in some of the activities.
