In reply to "Nonconformist," writing in your issue of July...
In reply to "Nonconformist," writing in your issue of July 13 [1935], let me say that anyone who understands the teachings of Christian Science sufficiently to demonstrate or prove them to be true, can see at once when another does not understand them. It was St. Paul who said, "The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." In order to understand Christian Science our critic must learn to discern between the divine Mind, or God, and the carnal mind, which St. Paul termed "enmity against God."
Mrs. Eddy did not "learn" her ideas from Quimby, as our critic asserts. Her ideas came to her as she studied the Bible, and imbibed its spiritual meaning. She is consistent and logical in all her writings. She states her premise, that God is infinite Spirit, and that man in His image and likeness is His expression or reflection, and therefore spiritual. Every conclusion she draws conforms to this premise.
In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, she writes, "Reality is spiritual, harmonious, immutable, immortal, divine, eternal" (p. 335). Our critic will see from this definition of reality that sin, disease, and death cannot possibly be considered real. The life of Christ Jesus was a constant demonstration of the unreality and powerlessness of the carnal mind and its effects. When ten lepers came to him to be healed, they went away cleansed. What destroyed the leprosy? The truth which he knew destroyed the false beliefs of the lepers, and these false beliefs having been destroyed, their physical manifestation inevitably disappeared. Christian Science alone can explain this phenomenon. The impossible never happens, and what was once possible is always possible under the same conditions. Christ Jesus was not the first to perform such works. Down through Old Testament history similar works had been performed by spiritually-minded people such as Moses, Elijah, Elisha, and others. This reveals the fact that there is an underlying divine Principle, the laws of which can be demonstrated by anyone who understands them. Mrs. Eddy, through her earnest study of the sacred records, discovered the divine Principle and rules which were known to the ancient prophets and our Master, but which became obscured about three hundred years after the ascension. An ever-increasing multitude is proving today the truth of her discovery. She has revealed the Comforter or "Spirit of truth," which is leading humanity "into all truth."
