On Earning Our Way

[Written Especially for Young People]

Those who are at school and college sometimes have difficulty in realizing the impartiality of God to His children. They may know that this is the teaching of Christian Science, and that the Bible authenticates it entirely, but they do not understand how to prove it in their lives. Perhaps they think it is unfair that one boy or girl should have more money, better clothes, or more advantages than others, and they wonder why this should be so.

Suppose we ask ourselves what the words "children of God" really mean. The Apostle John has said, "Beloved, now are we the sons of God." We hear this every Sunday when we go to church, and we often tell ourselves that this is the case, and yet we do not always feel very clear about it. We still see one boy trudging the street, while his more favored brother rides cosily in a closed car through the pouring rain or sleet.

Now let us look at a passage in "Christian Healing," a sermon by Mrs. Eddy, and see if this helps us to understand what has been perplexing us. She says (pp. 8, 9), "If we work to become Christians as honestly and as directly upon a divine Principle, and adhere to the rule of this Principle as directly as we do to the rule of mathematics, we shall be Christian Scientists, and do more than we are now doing, and progress faster than we are now progressing."
