I should like to express my gratitude for the love and protection which the understanding of Christian Science has brought to me, and to tell of an experience in which Christian Science was great great help. This experience proved to me that if one turns to God immediately, one need experience no fear.

I was in Quetta, India, during the earthquake, on the night of May 31, 1935. I was asleep in bed when suddenly the building I was in collapsed completely, like a pack of cards, and I found myself buried. I knew it must be an earthquake and immediately began saying "the scientific statement of being" from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 468). To the extent that I held to the statement that "there is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter," I experienced no fear. I also thought of the love of God, and realized that there was no intelligence in the bricks and stones all about me. I was very grateful that my head was quite free, although the rest of my body was deeply buried in small debris, and I could not move at all. There was an enormous weight on both my legs, and I remember being thankful that it was not on any other part of my body.

For five hours I lay like this, and during this time, two experiences occurred of which I should like to tell. Once I saw a light appear, and I called out, but was not heard, and the light faded away. This made me cry out in rather a frightened way, but my own voice frightened me so much that I stopped calling, and began singing one of our Leader's hymns (Poems, p. 4), "O gentle presence, peace and joy and power." This comforted me a lot.
