Universal Love

The impersonal and impartial love of Christ Jesus for his fellow men is clearly illustrated in the twelfth chapter of Matthew, where it is related he was informed that certain members of his family were desirous of speaking with him. Knowing that man is the reflection of God, Spirit, the Master refused to acknowledge a preference for personal attachment. Pointing to his disciples, he emphatically declared, "Behold my mother and my brethren! For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother." This gracious proclamation of impartial love by our Way-shower remains as the standard whereby all mankind must sooner or later prove the universality of the brotherhood of man.

One as a youth was separated from human relationship. On reaching maturity, he missed the family ties; he therefore grasped at every opportunity to avail himself of companionship. He also affiliated with several organizations, which gave only temporary satisfaction. The selfish searching for human love finally resulted in dissatisfaction and disillusionment. Realizing the need of something higher than a material sense of happiness, he unreservedly turned to Christian Science and learned that he must love impersonally and impartially. He found that implicit obedience to its teachings brought love, health, peace, and joy exceeding all human expectation.

Mary Baker Eddy, the loyal follower of the great Exemplar, asks this pertinent question in her matchless book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 266): "Would existence without personal friends be to you a blank? Then the time will come when you will be solitary, left without sympathy; but this seeming vacuum is already filled with divine Love. When this hour of development comes, even if you cling to a sense of personal joys, spiritual Love will force you to accept what best promotes your growth." Many Christian Scientists are discerning the wisdom of the above statement of our Leader, are striving to exchange their sense of material personality for the understanding of true individuality, and are being rewarded accordingly.
