Resting in Truth
The understanding of God and of man's relation to Him is true rest. Mary Baker Eddy writes in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 218), "The consciousness of Truth rests us more than hours of repose in unconsciousness." What a wonderful privilege it is to demonstrate this truth! Man eternally rests in the consciousness of at-one-ment with his divine source; he is never in bondage to inability, weakness, personal responsibility, hurry, or worry. Man is established in joyous, continuous, unlabored activity. God's work is done, and one's business of reflecting the completeness, beauty, and oneness of His creation is restful and strength-giving.
Fatigue, weakness, and weariness are not a necessary part of human experience any more than are sickness and sin. All these are errors of belief, the belief, in a power opposed to God. And the understanding of God and of man's relation to Him destroys every error arising from the belief that life and substance are in matter. With her characteristic love for all and her great compassion for mankind, Mrs. Eddy has given in her textbook definite instructions for overcoming fatigue. There may be found a clear exposition of the states of moral thinking which apparently cause fatigue, of the opposite thoughts which bring about a scientific and permanent healing. She says on page 217, "The scientific and permanent remedy for fatigue is to learn the power of Mind over the body or any illusion of physical weariness, and so destroy this illusion, for matter cannot be weary and heavyladen."
Christ Jesus offered the same compassionate instruction to his followers when he said, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." It is as if he had said, Come and think as I do; drop your material beliefs; surrender your material sense of self, and rest in the knowledge that God's work is done and that you have but to reflect it.
