It is generally accepted as a fact that the age of so-called miracles ceased with the advent of Jesus and his disciples. Jesus admonishes us to follow his example. In Christian Science our beloved Leader teaches us the rules by which, when they are rightly applied, we too may accomplish healing work.
Several years ago, after receiving innumerable benefits from the study of Christian Science, I became very conscious of its unceasing protection. I forgot, however, that it requires a constant perusal of the rules in order to realize the benefit of this protection. Mrs. Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 446), "A thorough perusal of the author's publications heals sickness." In the course of events, I found myself in a foreign land where there were no practitioners. I was alone and so ill that I knew very little of what was being decided in regard to me. There were a few days of a growing weakness and fatigue. Then, on the first of April, in a semiconscious condition, I was taken from the hotel in which I was living, to a private resort situated outside the city. Also, without my knowledge, physicians were summoned and word sent to the United States for someone to come to me—that my condition was critical. My mother came, but before sailing she and my father called upon a Christian Science practitioner from whom I had always received help. He gave me treatment and kept in touch with my mother. When my mother arrived the physicians gave her no hope whatsoever of my recovery.
I can recall, in a moment of consciousness, lying in a bed which stood near to a large window. Looking up, I saw the trees literally covered with cherry blossoms. It seemed to me a perfect paradise. It was Easter Monday. Then, one day, I was taken from the bed and put into a chair beside another window. Looking down, I saw long grass and a man cutting it with a scythe. Of a sudden I remembered the blossoms and wondered how there could be long grass in blossom time. Turning to an attendant I asked the date. She told me that it was the nineteenth of August.
