It has been my humble privilege to be a student of Christian Science for the past twenty years. Through witnessing a remarkable healing by Christian Science treatment I became interested. Unceasing efforts to live my understanding of the Christ, Truth, have brought to me and mine blessed fruitage. Being mindful of the help received from testimonies given at the Wednesday evening meetings and in the Christian Science periodicals, I contribute the following experiences which I had while serving with the Canadian forces during the World War. Though I was young in Science, my faith was great, hence my complete protection. A copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy was sent to me by my wife. It was read at length daily and was with me always.
For protection from a machine-gun bullet, fired at point blank range, I am grateful. Our beloved Leader writes (Science and Health, p. 358), "Can a leaden bullet deprive a man of Life,—that is, of God, who is man's Life?" For protection in three major battles, even though my clothing and equipment were pierced by bullets in several places, I am grateful. When stricken with a violent fever, I barely possessed strength enough to climb into my cot and light a piece of candle to set on my helmet, so that I might read from Science and Health. The effort made resulted in a complete healing overnight, and gratitude remains unbounded. For a quick recovery from the effects of chlorine gas, when I was overcome and the valley of the shadow seemed close, I am grateful, for it enabled me to aid my stricken comrades. Moving up into the trenches on one occasion, I stepped into a hole, and went down with my whole weight, plus seventy-five or eighty pounds of equipment, and twisted my right ankle. The tears coursed at the momentary agony, but an instant denial of error's claim of injury, and the affirmation of the ever-presence of Truth, brought instantaneous healing and fervent expressions of gratitude to our Father-Mother God. When my closest comrade was killed, and my agony later at the mortal sense of loss seemed overwhelming and unbearable, the Christian Science textbook again was the means of restoring reason and banished from my consciousness the fear of death. As a result of this experience, I positively know beyond question of doubt that, in Christian Science, we can find the "balm in Gilead," a surcease from all sorrow.
To acknowledge gratitude for these demonstrations of ever-present Truth does not express what my heart feels. I am endeavoring to live it. The strength and courage to carry on under all circumstances came solely as a result of daily study of the textbook. To God, to Christ Jesus, to our revered Leader, my gratitude is unbounded, and I could not close without expressing joy for membership in The Mother Church and a branch church, in which I am active, and for every single activity of the Christian Science movement.
