Paul said, "My speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power." So Christian Science came to me. After years of sickness, loss, and the passing on of dear ones, I was suddenly stricken with hemorrhage, tuberculosis, and heart failure. All remedies failed. I was not resigned to leaving my small children alone in the world. I knew no Christian Scientists, and thought strangers would not welcome me, for friends and physicians looked upon me as "a shadow that declineth." I heard of Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy, and commenced to read it and attend the Christian Science church.
A time came when our home was to be sold for debts, as we had nothing with which to pay them. Real estate dealers could not sell or trade because of hard times. Just two weeks before the sale I asked a Christian Science practitioner for help, which was lovingly given; and everything was settled and most of the debts were paid off in about a week in a normal way. The disease was not so quickly overcome. I had to meet many errors, but although they tried to turn me against Christian Science, they could not succeed. That was many years ago. I was brought back to health, and have since lived a normal, useful life.
One dark day I was alone in the basement, carrying a shovel of coal for the furnace. My feet caught on an obstruction, and I was thrown with great force, my face striking against the furnace. I was glad that I had studied Christian Science, for there was no time to study then. I declared audibly "the scientific statement of being" (Science and Health, p. 468), and the practitioner who was called gave me treatment. My face was crushed, and there was a hole in my head, but there was no pain or soreness, and I was almost well the next week, bearing no mark or scar.
