Discipleship

Jesus , I hear thy voice of gentle power
Calling to me,
As in that far-off sacred hour
It called in Galilee:
Fishers of men!
And in that unity of heart with heart
Expectant of the Christly call,
Thou calledst all
Who through all time,
In every age and every clime,
Should follow thee.
I hear another voice in this my day,
A voice of gracious tenderness and might
Of one who with a spiritual light
Has reillumined all thy way—
A woman's voice, insistent, clear, and true,
Explaining all the law that Jesus knew,
Making his Science usable to me,
If I will learn in true humility.
Divine, compassionate, they call away
From all that erring mortal sense would say
Of them, their mission or their word;
And, in my quiet listening is stirred
A sense of mission great and beautiful,
Christly vocation, meek and wonderful.
One is their purpose and from one hope springs.
The angels' song in Bethlehem and Boston rings,
"Good will to men in Love's eternal day,
Peace and prosperity and Life alway."
Come out, they cry, for evil is a lie;
Go forth and demonstrate its unreality;
No sandals needest thou, for thou art shod
With the all-power of omnipresent God;
No staff is in thy hand, but thou shalt prove
Healing and strength of everlasting Love.
