I came into Christian Science through a quick and easy...
I came into Christian Science through a quick and easy healing of a burst varicose vein, although I understood very little of how this healing came about. I realize now that it was demonstrated through my desire for good, and the consequent opening of the channels for Truth to flow in. However, I did not, in spite of this healing, study Christian Science seriously, with the result that revengeful, hateful, jealous thoughts found me easy prey, and the poison of this wrong thinking produced in belief a terrible illness. Not having kept my lamp filled and trimmed, as it were, I had no light in the darkness. Materia medica was resorted to, with the result of a surgical operation to discover what was wrong with my internal organs.
The night before this operation I asked to see a Christian Science practitioner. She came to me and said: "My child, remember that God is everywhere. His love surrounds you, and only good can come to you. All here are reflecting Him, in their goodness and kindness to yourself. Had you realized some of the truth before, you need not have been in the hospital, but now doubtless your extremity is God's opportunity. When tomorrow you go on the operating table know that only good exists, that there is no fear, as God governs, and know that, as you go off to sleep in love, so shall you awake."
When I had recovered consciousness sufficiently to begin to think, I asked to see the surgeon who had operated. I asked him if all was well, and he shook his head. I asked if it was cancer, and he said, "Yes, in the big intestine, inoperable and incurable." I asked if it meant I was to die, and he said, "Yes."
