The Perfect Idea

[Original article in German]

Surely all will agree that the best and most profitable knowledge is an understanding of God, the creator, the infinite source of all. It is scientific to know, not merely believe, that man, as created by God, is spiritual and not material. Man, the perfect idea of God, is our real selfhood. Let us think, then, of what it means to be His image and likeness, to be called "the children of God."

All the forces of God, Spirit, stand behind us, and we can do all that it is right for us to do, if we are convinced of our oneness with Him. In this apprehension lies our whole salvation, our liberation from the yoke of bondage to evil, from the dream of life in matter. "Now are we the sons of God;" we do not need to ask to become the sons, or fear that we could ever lose this relationship. This divine sonship is an eternal, invariable fact, which has ever existed, and which will not pass away. Mary Baker Eddy says on page 476 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "Mortals will disappear, and immortals, or the children of God, will appear as the only and eternal verities of man."

Christian Scientists are learning to prove how wonderful this sonship with God is, and how to live faithfully according to Jesus' command, "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect." We must behold our true self and that of others as God beholds His likeness. Whenever we think of our real self as less than the perfect child of the perfect Father, our estimate is false, and, in belief, we shut ourselves out from the influx of thoughts from divine Spirit.
