"I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings."

From the age of nine I attended the Christian Science Sunday School, and shortly after my marriage I became a member of a branch Christian Science church and of The Mother Church.

A testing time came in the form of a severe nervous breakdown, caused by sensitiveness and resentment. The aid of Christian Science practitioners was sought, but with no lasting result. Since I had never had the help of a medical practitioner for any major difficulty, I thought perhaps that would bring me relief. I tried to turn completely from Christian Science and do just as the doctors directed. I seemed benefited for about a year, and then another breakdown occurred, more severe than the first. By this time I did not know where to turn. I kept thinking that there was no one to turn to but God, but that I was unworthy because I had failed Christian Science, rather than that Christian Science had failed me. In the darkest hour I was guided to a consecrated Christian Science practitioner, who took me into her heart as well as home, and showed me what unselfish love really is. The patience she manifested came from God, most certainly. By then I had no hope for a healing, but desired mental peace. I knew Mrs. Eddy had said, "Love imparts the clearest idea of Deity" (Science and Health, p. 517), and the Bible, "Perfect love casteth out fear." So I started out to be loving. Step by step, by proving worthy in the little testing times, though I failed many times, I was led to mental peace, great joy, health, and a happy home. I have resumed church membership where I am now an active member.
