The Basis of Unity

Men and nations need a common basis on which to work out their mutual problems, and they are destined to find it in the government of divine Principle. Do groups of mathematicians quarrel on the subject of mathematics? This is unlikely, since the basis of their unity as mathematicians is their common knowledge of mathematics and their correct application of its rules. Should one or another of the group fail to bring out right results in his calculations, the remedy would not be personal opinion, heated argument, strife, disapproval, rivalry, but a chastened turning to a deeper understanding of mathematics.

For centuries, humanity has chafed under the obvious injustices, inequalities, and hazards which keep nations in a ferment of fear, aggression, and self-defense. Earth's great family needs stability, and its commendable desire to achieve unity and peace is destined to be consummated. But on what basis? Not on that of arrogance, human will, or selfish ambition, for these are always at variance. Evil deceives and enslaves humanity, and it is fiction, not fact.

With the revelation of Christian Science has come the understanding of spiritual unity with God, Spirit, and the practical fruits of this unity take form in the healing of stubborn sin and sickness, in the overcoming of poverty and distressing human estrangements. Christian Science is the pure Christianity taught and demonstrated by Christ Jesus. It is, therefore, the outcome, not of human opinion, but of spiritual revelation. It is not superstition, but irrefutable, demonstrable truth. It is pure metaphysics, making plain the only means by which the requirements of true Christianity can be fulfilled and the deepest needs of humanity satisfied. On page 571 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy writes, "The cement of a higher humanity will unite all interests in the one divinity."
