Healing, a Primary Requirement

Christ Jesus proved the truth of his message by healing, and there is not the slightest doubt that he expected his followers of all time to do likewise. In the ninth chapter of his Gospel, Luke writes of him: "Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases. And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick." Healing was a primary requirement with the Master.

Throughout her writings Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, maintains the thought just expressed, namely, that those with an understanding of the truth which Jesus taught, and which is made clear by Christian Science, should prove that understanding by healing. Indeed, unless one is able in some measure to overcome the false beliefs of sickness and sin by spiritual means, he can hardly be said to possess a knowledge of the great truths of spiritual being which the Nazarene Prophet taught and practiced.

Besides proving that one possesses a demonstrable knowledge of spiritual truth, healings are of much value. For example, the number is great of those who have been led to take up the study of Christian Science after witnessing the healing of others, or after reading about such healings, perhaps in the chapter "Fruitage" in Science and Health or in the Christian Science periodicals, or after hearing about them at the Wednesday evening testimony meetings. The authenticated testimonies of healing given in Science and Health and in The Christian Science Journal, Sentinel, and Herald, are published for that very purpose, as well as to stimulate faith in the power of Truth to heal, and to furnish the inquirer with some information as to the rules underlying Christian Science practice.
