The Lectures
Introductions to Lectures Kirkwood, Missouri (First Church).
Lecturer: Frank Bell; introduced by Mrs. Oella C. Webster, who said:—
To a bewildered, confused, and frightened world, Christian Science brings assurance of salvation.
Thirty years ago, I thought I knew a great deal about God; but one dear to me seemed mentally beyond human help, so I began to study Christian Science and the healing came, although the practitioner was in St. Louis and the patient on the Pacific Coast. Since that time God has been my only physician in sickness and sorrow. Twice in my home I have seen "the last enemy," death, driven back by the knowledge that God is Life.
So I am glad and most grateful that one of Mrs. Eddy's wise provisions for the help of mankind was the establishment of the Board of Lectureship of The Mother Church, because the members of this Board go throughout the world bidding the children of men lift their eyes to the everlasting hills of the eternal God, beyond the mists of earth, to see that man is the child of God, spiritual and perfect as his Maker.
Breslau, Germany (First Church).
Lecturer: Richard J. Davis; introduced by Rudolf Dobermann, who said:—
To all those who study it earnestly, Christian Science is a never-failing source of spiritual riches. When I began to study this Science years ago, I was first deeply impressed by the thought of divine Love, by the fact that all good is in conformity with law. Today I know that it is of the highest importance to all to understand the power of Love, the omnipotence of Love, based on this law. As a business man I gradually have brought myself to make profitable use of this understanding, for when I have been confronted by weighty business problems I have relied willingly on ever-operative divine guidance; and in this way I have reaped many blessings.
I had one very beautiful proof of this truth when I had to put through a large railway project for my firm in the Riesengebirge. From the human viewpoint the work encountered all possible hindrances—unfavorable weather, technical and financial difficulties, and the need of much more time in building than was originally foreseen. That summer I learned to base my work on Christian Science thinking, and I spent all my leisure hours reading on the subject. I clung to one statement from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 463), "A spiritual idea has not a single element of error, and this truth removes properly whatever is offensive." And so it proved. Every difficulty was worked out, and the necessary means were there time after time to forward the building, and finally to finish it successfully.
London, England (Eleventh Church).
Lecturer: Judge Samuel W. Greene; introduced by Lady Armitage-Smith, who said:—
Christian Science is bringing healing and joy to those who turn to it, for therein they find a practical, religion, one which meets their needs in sickness as in health, in the big problems of life as in the daily affairs of home or business. It brings the blessed assurance and proof that the power and love of God are as available and ever present now as in the time of Christ Jesus. Truly has Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, stated in one of her works entitled "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 365), "If Christian Science lacked the proof of its goodness and utility, it would destroy itself; for it rests alone on demonstration."
Christian Science was first presented to a member of my family nearly forty years ago, and by reading Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy she was healed of insomnia of three years' standing. In the time that has elapsed since then, I have both witnessed and experienced the healing of grief, of lack, and of trouble of many kinds; and with gratitude I have come to learn that the beautiful promises of the Bible are for our own time.
