It is with much gratitude that I testify to the healing power of Christian Science.
Some years ago, and all within a comparatively short space of time, I helped to nurse four relatives who were suffering from cancer. In the last case the disease seemed to take a particularly distressing form; and I was seized with a great dread that I might have contracted it.
I had just begun to study Christian Science at the time, and I knew that this fear should be cast out of my consciousness, but somehow I could not speak of it to anyone. So it remained more or less latent in my thought for about twelve months, when physical symptoms appeared which forced me to think, like Job, "The thing which I greatly feared is come upon me." After battling with this thought for a week or two I asked for Christian Science help, and after the first treatment the most distressing symptom entirely disappeared. The remainder of the healing was slow, but it was a time of wonderful unfoldment of the omnipotence and omnipresence of good. First, I learned that as a child of our Father-Mother God I could inherit nothing but good, and then I began, dimly at first, to understand what Mrs. Eddy meant when she wrote on page 14 of Science and Health, "Entirely separate from the belief and dream of material living, is the Life divine." As I gradually realized more clearly that this divine Life was my life, that it was entirely separate from matter, and could not be touched by disease or death, the discordant conditions entirely disappeared. This healing took place over ten years ago and has been permanent.
Shortly after this I experienced another healing which has meant a great deal to me. One morning I awoke with a very painful throat. For four days it got steadily worse until I could swallow nothing. On the second day I asked for treatment. The extreme fear at once left me. On the evening of the fourth day, when I was longing to drink some cold water, Jesus' words to the woman at the well came to me and I remembered how he had said, "Whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst." Immediately I saw that I already had this water of Life, of which I could not be deprived by any suggestions of error, and with this thought the desire to drink the material water left me and I fell asleep. In about two hours I awoke and found that the obstruction had disappeared and I was able to swallow normally.
For these and for the many other healings which I have experienced I am most grateful, but still more so for the fuller understanding of God and man which has come with them. For the unfailing love, wisdom, and patience of the practitioner who helped me, and to our beloved Leader, who made such help possible, I am more grateful than I can say.—(Miss) Hannah Mary Maynard, Richmond, Surrey, England.
