Christian Science came to me in an hour of great darkness,...
Christian Science came to me in an hour of great darkness, when I was without hope "and without God in the world." As a young girl I was very easily depressed, though I was brought up in a religious home. This depression seemed to grow as I came in contact with the world and saw the tragedy in the great majority of human lives. From this standpoint I began to lose all my faith in God, and to doubt and question everything that my parents had taught me.
One day when things seemed particularly dark and my mental anguish was intolerable I asked a Christian Science practitioner to help me, thinking in my ignorance that she might be able to mesmerize me out of this depressed state of mind. I shall never forget this first experience of relief through Christian Science. One afternoon, following a desperate morning, the gloom and depression were completely lifted and a great sense of peace came over me. Though I had no faith in Science, I felt there must be something in it to have wrought this change in me; and on the advice of the practitioner I started to read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I did not make much progress with the book, however, as it seemed to stir up the false theology still latent in my consciousness. And so I drifted into a belief or blind faith in Christian Science, always asking the practitioner to help me when I was in difficulty.
During the war, however, while working in a military hospital overseas and hearing of the many beautiful healings amongst the soldiers, wrought through Christian Science when all other means had failed, I began to realize that I knew very little about this Science.
