Public Opinion

In your issue of August 2, an article mentioned a certain Californian and cited various misleading statements derogatory to Christian Science and Christian Scientists that were set forth in a book of which he is the author.

To correct wrong impressions that were given by the book referred to, please let me state that the Bible and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy are the textbooks of Christian Science. Science and Health does not take the place of the Bible; the writings of Mrs. Eddy confirm the Scriptures and unlock their treasures. Christian Scientists accept without reservation all the words and works of Christ Jesus, and strive to follow his example. In strict accord with the Master's teaching, this religion destroys all types of discord by spiritually mental means.

Contrary to an inference in the book cited in your article, Christian Science does not countenance oppression and exploitation; these wrongs are among the errors that fall before the effectual application of the teachings of Christian Science. Furthermore, blind optimism, will power, and other such materialistic qualities have no place in the practice of this religion.
