I desire to express my gratitude for the many blessings I have received since I have known something about Christian Science.

My father was afflicted with rheumatism all his life, his mother had passed on from the same disease, and nearly all of my paternal relatives were afflicted with it. At nine years of age I fell victim to this ailment. A few months later I suffered my first attack of tonsillitis. During the fourteen years which followed I suffered untold discomfort from both these physical difficulties. The physicians who attended me in those days stated that both these diseased conditions were caused from uric acid in the blood, that the disease was inherited, and that there was not the slightest chance I should ever become any better under medical treatment, as there was no known treatment in materia medica for eliminating uric acid from the blood. When I had reached my twenty-third year I was practically incapacitated for business of any kind, and the future held nothing very bright for me.

At that time I was living in a hotel in one of the cities of the Middle West, and there I met a Christian Scientist. About two weeks following our meeting I was suddenly stricken with an acute attack of tonsillitis. My regular physician was called. These acute attacks of tonsillitis usually lasted from twelve to sixteen days, during which period I was unable to swallow food or liquids. The fourth evening after this attack had appeared, my Christian Science friend came in to see me, as he usually did after his return from business. After considerable discussion regarding my physical condition, as well as the merits of Christian Science, I finally asked him to treat me. At that time I knew nothing about this Science, but I was quite confident that no matter what was tried, it would result in failure, as had everything else. This was about ten o'clock in the evening, and almost immediately I fell asleep and slept until noon the following day. This was the first night in over ten years that I had slept without an opiate. When I awoke the following day I discovered that I was free from pain and the swelling in my throat had disappeared. A few months later I became conscious of the fact that the rheumatism had also vanished. During the thirty-three years that have since passed I have had no recurrence of either of these physical conditions.
