Redeeming the Past

As we progress in the study and application of Christian Science, the necessity for putting out of our consciousness all past errors, of whatever nature, becomes evident. The path of a Christian Scientist is an ascending one, and progress is certainly hindered if one is continually looking backward. Jesus said, "Let the dead bury their dead." All sorrow and tribulation which seem to have been our experience must be buried, cast out of thought, for they were never part of the real man, made in God's image and likeness.

Jesus knew there is nothing absolutely true but perfect spiritual being; perfect God, perfect man, the perfect spiritual universe. With this goal ever before us, why should we look backward and mentally rehearse past sufferings, thereby retarding our spiritual progress? We should follow the Christ along the ever-ascending straight and narrow way.

On page 34 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy writes: "Through all the disciples experienced, they became more spiritual and understood better what the Master had taught. His resurrection was also their resurrection. It helped them to raise themselves and others from spiritual dulness and blind belief in God into the perception of infinite possibilities." Shall we not let Jesus' resurrection be also our resurrection from false beliefs, regarding any suffering we may have been through as unreal, and awake to a spiritual outlook? We should pray also that we may perceive the infinite possibilities which lie before us.
