Bury Times

A correspondent, in his reply to my letter in your previous issue, says that Christian Science, instead of being based on the Bible, contradicts it in teaching and belief. What he means, of course, is that the Christian Science interpretation of the Bible is different from his, and that is admittedly the case. The Christian Science interpretation of the Bible is spiritual, while his is apparently largely material.

There are many interpretations of the Bible, but there can obviously be only one absolute true and correct interpretation, for the God who is eternal Truth is without "variableness" or "shadow of turning," and there can therefore be only one correct understanding and interpretation of His Word.

There is nothing to be gained, therefore, in disputing about our different interpretations. Let all of us who love the Bible rejoice that we have it as our guide and can unite to that extent, and let us put its teachings into practice in holier, purer, humbler, healthier lives; then the future can settle by results which of all the interpretations has the greatest fruitage in establishing the kingdom of heaven among men, for Jesus' test was, "By their fruits ye shall know them." To Christian Scientists it seems wrong to attack the religion of others, but, for the sake of justice, they do believe in correcting misstatements and misunderstandings about their own.
