How Divine Love Meets the Human Need

Perhaps none of the words of our Leader are more often quoted, or more lovingly referred to by students of Christian Science, than those she has given us in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 494), "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need." These beautiful words reaffirm the Psalmist's acknowledgment of the goodness of God, "Thou openest thine hand, and satisfiest the desire of every living thing."

Countless numbers have felt a response to the tenderness implied in these words, longed to prove them true, and yet doubted the practical availability of all that their promise implies, admitting them to be comforting and beautiful in theory but beyond the boundaries of even our highest hope to realize; and so, too good to be true. We ask: What then about the facts that are so obvious, the lack, sorrow, suffering, and distress that confront us on all sides? Can we honestly and reasonably accept these assurances when all the outward evidence contradicts them? We have so many needs unmet, so many unsatisfied desires, so many longings unfulfilled. Why is it so? We want to understand.

This very desire for understanding brings an answer to our questionings, for it is the awakening in the human heart of a longing to find God. And with the finding, which inevitably follows true seeking, comes the understanding of man's relationship to God, bringing with it the ultimate certain satisfying of all our human needs.
