"Love supports the struggling heart until it ceases to sigh over the world and begins to unfold its wings for heaven" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mrs. Eddy, p. 57).

When I first began an earnest search for an understanding of Christian Science I was alone in the midst of the multitudes of New York City, completely shut off from any friendly human relationship by distrust and a very burdened heart. The Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly were my daily spiritual food, and activity in a branch church satisfied my longing to be of service. But I needed a friend, although I was unwilling to be one myself, because of the sharp experiences I had just gone through.

You may know my deep gratitude for the Board of Lectureship which our inspired Leader established, when I tell you that God had already met my need for friendship through Christian Science lectures. For many months I attended almost every lecture delivered on Manhattan, in Brooklyn. or in the Bronx. Though never once during that time did I speak to a lecturer, still each member of that Board become my very real and understanding friend, showing me my true, glorious nature as a child of God, enlightening my hungry thought, and encouraging my struggling heart.
