Christian Science literature had often been brought to...

Christian Science literature had often been brought to our home, but I would always send it back without reading it, telling my husband that I did not want anything to do with that religion.

In January, 1930, I was stricken with paralysis, the right side of my body being helpless and my speech being affected; and for two months a doctor came almost daily. A neighbor, who is a Christian Scientist, called often to see me, and one day she said that she would give me a copy of a Christian Science lecture if I would read it. I thought, I have read almost everything else, I will read this lecture to see just what Christian Science has to say about Jesus. Before I finished the lecture I decided that Christian Scientists were following Jesus more closely than I had ever done. Then a dear friend came in and told me that God's love and truth would make me free, and asked me if I would accept Christian Science. The next morning I told her that I would try it. A practitioner many miles from my home, a lady whom I had met once or twice when she was visiting in our neighborhood, was called and lovingly accepted the case. At her recommendation I began at once to read Science and Health. My friend got me a Christian Science Quarterly and I began the daily study of the Lesson-Sermons. In July I attended my first Wednesday evening church meeting. Almost from the very first I began to gain my freedom. When the practitioner took up the work for me I was bedfast—had to be taken out of bed and put back again as helpless as a baby. The healing took place through absent treatment, and in a few months I was sewing, crocheting, baking, and combing my hair. One year from the time I was stricken I was doing my housework. I am deeply grateful for the work done by this practitioner, and for the healing of constipation at this same time.

I was brought up in an orthodox church and had attended Sunday school from childhood, and I am grateful for this early training; but there came a time when I realized there was something I did not have. I was not satisfied. As a student of Christian Science I have found the "pearl of great price" and have gained that "peace of God, which passeth all understanding." God's love and truth have set me free. I am grateful for membership in The Mother Church and in one of its branches, and for the privilege of teaching in Christian Science Sunday School. I am grateful for Christ Jesus, our Way-shower, and for our revered Leader.
