A Child's Thought of Heaven

STEP by step I climbed the rugged hill
Of thought to heaven's door. It is quite still
And clear and peaceful here. I wonder why
I have not tried before to come so high.

Each time when I have seen this steep ascent,
I thought so pure and rare a firmament
Would leave me lonely, dull, and far apart
From all I held most dear. Yet now my heart
Is filled with tender kindness all about,
And such the joy and friendliness throughout
That courage takes the place of all my fears;
With God right here I find I have no tears.
Just now I caught a glimpse of life so full
And rich I felt it at my heartsrings pull;
While love of good, so warm and sweet and near,
Has made me more than glad that I am here.

It seems that God has led me by the hand
To help me step within His promised land.
My heart is satisfied. It sings and sings,
As angel thoughts spread, underneath, wide wings.
