A Child's Thought of Heaven

STEP by step I climbed the rugged hillOf thought to heaven's door. It is quite stillAnd clear and peaceful here. I wonder whyI have not tried before to come so high.

Each time when I have seen this steep ascent,I thought so pure and rare a firmamentWould leave me lonely, dull, and far apartFrom all I held most dear. Yet now my heartIs filled with tender kindness all about,And such the joy and friendliness throughoutThat courage takes the place of all my fears; With God right here I find I have no tears.Just now I caught a glimpse of life so fullAnd rich I felt it at my heartsrings pull; While love of good, so warm and sweet and near,Has made me more than glad that I am here.
