In your issue of April 20, 1934, under the caption, "Third in Series," you report a sermon in which the clergyman classifies Christian Science as "delusion"; in fact, as one of the delusions that would possess men's minds as prophesied by Paul. It is an easy matter to declare those deluded who do not agree with one, and to do so proves nothing. To take Paul's remarks as proof that Christian Science is a delusion is ineffective, and I am sure will not be acceptable to an intelligent and unprejudiced investigator.
A fair, open-minded method of judging the teachings of Christian Science would be to read the statements of Christ Jesus, especially in the Sermon on the Mount, and then to study the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, wherein will be found no claims for prayer or God's power that Jesus did not authorize. Christian Scientists, in brief, believe in one all-powerful God and in Christ Jesus as the Way-shower, and in that statement made by Jesus in John, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father." These works to which Jesus referred include the healing of all manner of sickness. Christian Scientists set out to heal sickness in this day and age, and they do heal it. In other words, Christian Scientists not only accept the high ideals set up by Jesus the Christ but prove their practicability in daily life.
A delusion can be a delusion only when it sets up a claim without proof. The healing work done by Christian Science is proof of Christian Science to those who practice it. False claims are quickly exposed through an investigation, and there can be no proof of delusion until those suspicious of delusion have made a fair and thorough investigation. A critic of Christian Science will be a just critic if he gives it a thorough investigation from personal experience before going on record publicly in regard to it.
