Fourteen years ago I began the study of Christian Science...
Fourteen years ago I began the study of Christian Science after I had searched unsuccessfully in many bypaths for the truth about God. It was not physical healing that I sought, but a practical, satisfactory knowledge of God and the universe. I was unhappy and dissatisfied, although performing a duty that had seemed right and necessary for me to perform, for certain physical conditions that the physician informed me were forerunners of a nervous breakdown were being manifested. All that I had heard about Christian Science had been most uncomplimentary, and I had no idea of turning to it. In fact, I was quite indignant when a well-meaning friend suggested that I might find Truth through its study. I had attended almost every Protestant church and examined its creed. I read books on all the isms that were suggested to me, only to become more confused and disturbed. I was a member of an orthodox church in whose work I had taken an active part from childhood, but whose teachings, I could not apply in everyday living. However, I wish to express my gratitude to that church for a knowledge of the Bible facts that it gave me. This Bible teaching has been a great help in my study of Christian Science, a Science which has given me a rich revelation of the Scriptures.
Finally, in my extremity, God provided the opportunity for one whom I had always known and respected to answer my questions about Christian Science. Most patiently and lovingly did this friend and her mother point out the way to me. I learned that this Science was the truth I was seeking. I am most grateful to these friends who pointed out to me the benefits of Christian Science, and not only pointed them out but proved them by their own lives.
After my first reading of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I suddenly realized that I was completely free from a nasal catarrh that had bothered me for several years and at times had become most annoying to me and to those around me. I had believed that the climate of a beautiful valley increased this irritation. This trouble has never returned, although I lived in that valley for eight years after the healing. Since that time Christian Science has been my only physician and has healed me of chronic constipation, nervous headaches, grippe, a broken ankle bone, and two nervous collapses. For the patient, generous, loving help of practitioners I can never be thankful enough. Articles and testimonies in The Christian Science Journal and the Sentinel have constantlybrought me the exact messages needed in studying my way through seeming obstacles. The Christian Science Monitor brings daily comfort, for it brings me into closer contact with our movement and the world. For the love and inspiration received while a guest at the Sanatorium of the Christian Science Benevolent Association at Boston, words are inadequate to express my gratitude. That home is one more proof of the love and vision of our Leader.
