Among the Churches

TAFT, CALIFORNIA (First Church).—The new church edifice erected by First Church of Christ, Scientist, at 615 Kern Street, is now ready for occupancy. Opening services were held Sunday, June 17, at eleven o'clock in the morning and eight o'clock in the evening. The Reading Room maintained by the church is now located in the new building. The cost of the building complete is in the neighborhood of eight thousand dollars, exclusive of seats and heating and cooling plant, the latter to be installed later. The total seating capacity of the main auditorium and adjacent connecting Sunday school rooms is about three hundred and fifty. The façade, of stucco construction, strikes an unobtrusive futur istic note, for while it departs somewhat from conventional lines, it does this without seeming to be bizarre. The effect, therefore, is not only distinctive, but pleasing as well.

The erection of this building bears tangible evidence of the substantial growth of the Christian Science movement in the community. Starting from small beginnings in 1919, the church and the Cause which it represents have grown and expanded until the present commodious structure seemed to be the next logical step.

The building is a credit to the community, and the Christian Scientists of Taft may justly feel proud of their accomplishment.—Daily Midway Driller.
