My gratitude to Christian Science for all it has done...

My gratitude to Christian Science for all it has done for me is my motive in writing this testimony. For many years I had suffered every winter with chilblains on my feet. This extremely annoying condition would appear in the fall as soon as the weather became cold, and would last until spring. I tried several remedies, but nothing gave me any relief. When, in September, I began to read Science and Health, it was not with the thought of healing this trouble, but because I wanted to gain an understanding of its teaching. I became very much interested in the book, so much so that I spent all my spare time reading it and wished that I had more time for it. I read very slowly and pondered what I read. It took me several months to finish it. I became so absorbed in it that I forgot all about my feet until the winter was nearly gone. Then I noticed that I had not been bothered with chilblains. This was nearly twenty years ago, and since then there has not appeared a sign of this condition.

In the years that have passed since this first healing, I have had many others. For one of these I am particularly grateful. About fourteen years ago I gradually became completely deaf in my left ear. I did not ask for help and did not have enough understanding to help myself. Other problems in the family seemed more necessary to take up at that time, so the sense of deafness was not handled. It ran on for about seven years; then I realized that I must do something about it.

About this time, a member of the family went away to take instruction in Christian Science under an authorized teacher. When he returned home I asked him to take up the work for me, which he gladly did. For several months there was no material change in the ear, but my thinking was undergoing a change in regard to hearing. I began to see that hearing is a spiritual quality instead of a material sense. Slowly the truth dawned on my consciousness. Then I put the thought of deafness out of my mind entirely. One day in the early spring, while I was eating lunch with the other members of the family, there seemed to be a sudden explosion in my ear. Nothing came out of the ear, but a great deal of sound rushed in. It startled me until I realized that it was the healing. I could hear a clock tick in the next room, and birds singing outside, though the doors and windows were closed. I wanted to shout for joy. I went to the telephone, called a friend, and heard through the receiver at my left ear, something I had not been able to do for years.
