As a boy in San Francisco during the earthquake and...
As a boy in San Francisco during the earthquake and fire of 1906, and later when enlisted in the World War, although at a loss to account for the seeming evil, I entertained one thought constantly—that a good God could not know of, or have anything to do with, such catastrophes. My faith in the power of a divine saving presence was further strengthened by witnessing so-called agnostics inevitably turning to an unknown God in humble prayer as a last resort when facing danger. The religion of my parents offered me neither comfort nor satisfaction with which to appease my hunger for spiritual food; and that desire was intensified when I was given the rôle of the leper healed by the Master in a well-known Biblical play.
This was my first introduction to the beauty and inspiration of the New Testament, and it created an interest in and love for the Bible. The tiny seed sown here, however, did not germinate until four years later. This awakening occurred nine years ago, and came from my being led to Christian Science for the healing of a severe cold. After my first visit to a practitioner, and attendance the same evening at a Wednesday testimony meeting at a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, my consciousness was so illumined with spiritual light that never since that day of days have I ceased to study and apply Christian Science to every condition and experience of my life. Chronic tonsillitis, colds, blood poisoning, constipation, and many other erroneous physical conditions have since been overcome.
My deepest gratitude and appreciation is for the gradual but sure overcoming of erroneous habits and traits of character. Innumerable times have I witnessed God's guidance and protection from impending disaster and death, and many proofs have I had of God's ability to supply a table in the wilderness when, to material sense, no supply was visible.
