When the efficacy of Christian Science was first brought...
When the efficacy of Christian Science was first brought to our attention I was in my teens and rapidly developing all the symptoms of Bright's disease, from which my father had passed on a few years before. One day my mother came in contact with a lady who began to talk with her about Christian Science. My mother drank in all that she said, and that night asked me if I would be willing to try this Science. As I was an almost constant sufferer from severe headaches I was willing to try anything. Work was begun by absent treatment, and in less than a month I was completely healed. Also during this treatment I was able permanently to leave off iron supports which I had worn in my shoes for years. Since then, for a period of about thirty years, we have depended entirely upon Christian Science.
There have been constant proofs during the years of the healing power of Christian Science. One very convincing proof of its protection came in the summer of 1929 while I was traveling in Italy, going from Venice up through the Dolomites with Cortina as our destination before nightfall. It was a long trip and at times our machine, which was leading the way, was traveling above sixty miles an hour over a winding mountain road, and I, the only Christian Scientist in the party, was constantly knowing the protection of God —that all the party were God's children and that there were no accidents in Mind. As the storm in which we had been driving increased and the mental work went on there seemed to come to me almost like a spoken voice the words, "Get out and take a picture." A lull in the storm came and I asked to have the machine stop at the next turn of the road. The turn was rapidly passed and again came the message, clearly, this time like a command, "Get out and take a picture." This time I was insistent that the stop be made. We halted for possibly five minutes and the picture was taken. Upon the return to the machine rain and hail came, followed by a rumble which sounded like thunder, though more menacing. By this time the machine was racing along. Soon down the road came a man running toward us with both hands up to halt the car. We were informed that just ahead there had been a tremendous landslide—part of the mountain on the right of the road had crossed the highway and gone down into the valley on the left, making passage impossible. Even as we drove a few hundred yards ahead we could see the dust still arising from the earth. The man remarked that we were fortunate not to have been there five minutes sooner, or we should have been swept down the mountain side. My companions said to me, "Wasn't it lucky that you took that picture?" I could only reply, "Doesn't this show that God governs?" In my heart was a prayer of thanksgiving.
This experience shows how important it is consistently and persistently to do our mental work for protection. Our Leader has emphasized this in many places in her writings. In our textbook she begins the Preface with the sentence, "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." In absolutely "leaning on the sustaining infinite" we do have the protection of the infinite all-power, God. It is with loving gratitude for God's protection as taught by studying Mrs. Eddy's writings that I send this testimony.
