The ability to appreciate others is one of the most outstanding signs of superiority. Probably no very great man or woman was ever appreciated during his lifetime. The reason is very plain. The ordinary person has no measuring stick with which to gauge special talents or abilities.

The appreciation of good music requires a knowledge of music. To properly value the quality of art requires artistic training. To understand the finer qualities of character demands a certain nobility of character in the one who esteems them.
