Bible Notes
"I will fetch my knowledge from afar, and will ascribe righteousness to my Maker" (Job 36:3)—The Hebrew word "tsedek," here rendered "righteousness," can also mean "justice" (cf. Brown, Driver, Briggs: Hebrew Lexicon, p. 841). Moffatt offers the interesting rendering: "I will now justify my Creator from a wide survey of the truth."
"He openeth also their ear to discipline" (Job 36:10)—The term translated "discipline" comes from the root "yasar," which also means "to instruct" (cf. Brown, etc., op. cit., p. 416); hence the Revised Version suggests: "He openeth also their ear to instruction;" and Smith: "He uncovers their ear to instruction;" while Moffatt has: "He makes them listen to sense."
"Remember that thou magnify his work, which men behold" (Job 36:24)—Many scholars now feel that the very unusual Hebrew form "shoreru" comes from the verb "shir" (to sing), rather than from "shur" (to behold). (See Driver and Gray: "Job," vol. II, p. 281.) Thus the Revised Version and Smith have "his work whereof men have sung;" and Moffatt: "Remember to extol him for his creation, that has moved men to song."
