For many years I have had cause for increasing gratitude...
For many years I have had cause for increasing gratitude for the blessings which Christian Science has brought to me. I have had many healings, and have endeavored to keep before my thought the lessons which each healing has brought.
About three years ago I was quite suddenly taken with a severe pain in my side, so that the simple act of walking a few steps became a most trying ordeal. A member of the family called a practitioner for help, and I received temporary relief. However, the pain returned, and for two days I remained at home, hoping to see the light, which I needed very much. Fear on the part of members of the family seemed so great that I knew I must make an effort to go about my work in the usual way, so on the third day, although the pain was almost unbearable, I reached the office where I was employed. The practitioner asked me to keep in close touch with her, which I did. That night when I reached home I was almost in a state of collapse, and very nearly yielded to a sense of discouragement. I knew, however, that my thought needed correcting or the condition would not have presented itself; and I also knew that the practitioner was doing thorough and persistent work for me. My duty was to lift my thought above self and cling to the truth about others as well as myself. As this thought became more clear to me I found that I was mentally rejoicing over every bit of good I saw manifested, and realized as never before the significance of every kind word and deed and its relation to the source of all good. As this thought expanded, the pain gradually subsided and I was soon completely free. Thus does the thought endeavoring to glorify God feel the healing power of Truth. I was grateful that in that week of intense suffering there was no desire on my part or on the part of members of the family to ask for medical advice, so firm was our faith in Christian Science.
At another time, while I was passing through a discordant business experience, I asked a practitioner for help for a painful condition in my back. It was not diagnosed, but was quite evidently a dislocated spinal vertebra. One Wednesday evening it seemed impossible to attend the testimony meeting. I went, however, and determined to listen to every word uttered, and not to let my thought dwell on self at any time. While I was listening to a testimony, these words, spoken by a man who was relating the solving of a business problem, seemed to illumine my thought: "Every idea of God is forever in its right place." As he spoke these words, the truth concerning my own business problem became very clear to me, and I rejoiced to see the nothingness of the discord. As this adjustment took place in my thinking I distinctly felt the bone snap back into place, and I was free from all pain. This was followed by a promotion in the office where I was employed, and thus that phase of the experience was also healed.
