When I first began to look into the teachings of Christian Science...
When I first began to look into the teachings of Christian Science I was not seeking improved physical health, but rather a religion which would satisfy my undefined hunger for something that was bigger and more sincere than all that I saw around me. I had lost interest in the church in which I had been brought up, so when Christian Science was presented to me, and I had read even a little of it, I felt sure that it was the truth which Christ Jesus had lived and taught—the Christ speaking to my awakened consciousness—and, being convinced, I continued studying.
I had, however, to walk by faith some time before I had occasion to prove for myself that what I had assumed was correct; and my first healing was an instantaneous one of all the acute symptoms of influenza. This healing came about through studying the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly. It was very wonderful and beautiful, and I was exalted beyond anything I had ever thought possible, as I now had conclusive proof that the Word of God, as revealed through Christian Science, does heal. I knew also that it would not make any difference in the future what anyone might say to me to the contrary, since I had experienced what it means to be "'absent from the body' and 'present with the Lord' in the demonstration of Spirit" (Science and Health, p. 14). That was more precious to me than the physical healing, for which I was, of course, deeply grateful.
Since then I have had many instantaneous healings, including those of incipient colds, influenza, gastritis, an acute heart attack, and a badly sprained ankle, either through the help of a Christian Science practitioner or my own understanding of the truth of being. I have also had to learn patience and to be more faithful in spiritualizing my thought when healings have seemed to be slow in taking place. When I really have said with my whole heart, "I will not let thee go, except thou bless me," I have experienced the transformation which always comes through the spiritualization of our thinking in Christian Science.
