For some time I have been a student of Christian Science...
For some time I have been a student of Christian Science, and am grateful to have proved that Christian Science does not fail when correctly applied. Recently I had the privilege of witnessing a wonderful healing.
A relative, nearly eighty years of age, was seized with great pain, due to an obstruction causing complete stoppage of the functions. A doctor was called in, and he said the case was one for a surgeon. The surgeon pronounced the condition serious and advised the immediate removal of the patient to a hospital, pending a surgical operation. The patient had only recently heard of Christian Science, and when asked if he would like Science help he said he would. The position was explained to the practitioner, who had a helpful talk with the patient, which resulted in an instantaneous healing of the tobacco habit, one of lifelong standing. On account of age, and the fact that other members of the family were not in favor of Christian Science treatment, it was deemed wise to let the operation be performed; at the same time the patient was told and the Christian Scientists were knowing all the while that the only operation is the operation of divine Love. The reference to "God as the only Life" and the statement that "it is a sin to believ that aught can overpower omnipotent and eternal Life," in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (pp. 428, 429), were helpful in rejecting much error that was voiced in regard to the seriousness of the case.
Some days after the operation the doctor expressed regret that, on examination, the condition had been found malignant, and owing to the nature of the obstruction the surgeon's knife could not remove it; it was also advised that the patient be removed to a hospital for incurables. This verdict did not daunt the practitioner and, relying absolutely on Truth, the patient was brought home and arrangements were made for a Christian Scientist to nurse him.
