The Human Need
In the paragraph containing the marginal heading "Theories helpless," Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 490): "Human theories are helpless to make man harmonious or immortal, since he is so already, according to Christian Science. Our only need is to know this and reduce to practice the real man's divine Principle, Love." This Science makes clear the distinction between the man of God's creating and the material counterfeit, or so-called man; and all may begin at once to demonstrate the reality of their being.
When Habakkuk declared God to be too pure to behold iniquity, he foreshadowed what was clearly exemplified in the life of our Master and is made plain in Christian Science, namely, that God, having made man in His own image and likeness, can see and know him only as partaking of the divine nature. God is Love; therefore He beholds man only as His beloved child.
Love is the great I AM; man is the likeness of the great I AM. In this sense there is no "I was." The great I AM is the only self-existent being. This fact, when understood in Christian Science, heals so-called disease, sin, self-condemnation, and other errors. A belief of chronic disease or sin is a belief that God is not always omnipresent; that another power named evil is present. If one believes that he has inherited some sinful trait or disease, and that the trouble is of many years' standing, he can through the application of Christian Science resist and remove that belief.
