Christian Science came to me in the darkest hour of my life, and through its teachings I have been transformed physically and mentally.
For many years prior to the world war I suffered greatly from physical troubles, and particularly from periodic pains in the head. Since boyhood I had ceased to attend any church, and had lived a godless, unhappy life, turning more and more to drink and drugs for ease from pain and worry. During my business career in England an associate once mentioned Christian Science to me, but evidently I was not ready to listen.
After service with the British Naval Air Service, toward the end of the war, I was sent to the United States on a special mission. After peace was declared I succumbed to many ills and entered a hospital for an operation. The next few years were spent chiefly in hospitals and sanitariums in the United States. Many famous doctors treated or operated upon me, and for several months I existed upon a milk diet. In spite of the kindness shown me, a stranger in a strange land, I grew steadily worse; one of my ills, diagnosed as a growth in the head, made it impossible for me to sleep except under the influence of opiates.
