God Was There

[Written Especially for Children]

Memory recalls a little girl who had attended a Christian Science Sunday School and who went away to a summer camp for the first time. She had been looking forward to being with others of her age, and to the fun of camp life in the woods and on the lake. There was no one at the camp whom she had ever known before, and there were no other Christian Scientists there. At first this did not seem to make any difference to her. There were exciting new things to learn every day—how to paddle a canoe, how to dive, how to ride horseback; it was all a grand adventure.

In spite of all the good times, after a short while she felt homesick, although her tentmates were friendly and her kind counselor tried to cheer her up. Then, one afternoon, the little girl remembered that she had Christian Science to help her; so she slipped away by herself to a quiet spot in the pine woods. Everything was peaceful about her. She thought of God, who is Love, and is always present. He was the same Father-Mother God she had learned about when she was at home and at Sunday school. She felt His loving presence with her and was sure that He would never leave her. Relieved and happy, the little girl went back to her friends. It was the first time she could remember having used Christian Science by herself, and it pleased her that those few moments alone with God had freed her from homesickness.

This little girl had really begun to learn something of the Bible truth that nothing "shall be able to separate us from the love of God." She also discovered that, as Mrs. Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 89), "Spirit, God, is heard when the senses are silent." By turning to God, wishing in her heart that she might find Him, she had proved that unhappy thoughts are silenced by the comforting sense of His presence.
