It is a privilege and duty to bear witness to the beneficent...
It is a privilege and duty to bear witness to the beneficent influences of a Christian Science lecture, and to express my deep-felt gratitude for the wise provision of our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, in establishing the Board of Lectureship of The Mother Church. The work of its consecrated members blesses a vast number of people. One spring I labored with a sense of illness for several days, but through a friend's help in Christian Science I was able to attend a lecture. I felt especially receptive to the good I knew to be there for me and for all those present. After retiring that evening I thought over the precious truths just heard and dwelt with them until I fell asleep. Toward morning a severe pain attacked me. Soon I was fully awake and knew immediately that the suffering was unreal; then I emphatically turned to the statements of truth which had absorbed me so recently. After a while I found myself entirely free, and a great peace filled me completely.
During the years of my study of Christian Science I have come to realize that the loving thoughts and wise behavior of those who have been healed not only helped to break down my resistance to this Science, but also at different times alleviated and banished sickness and suffering for myself and our small son, who was a delicate child. I was bound by astigmatism, nervous dyspepsia, rheumatism, and some organic difficulties—all induced through a pessimistic outlook upon life, fears, worries, and many unlovely traits of character. In my immediate family there had been healings of a limb, on which for twenty years there had been an open wound, a severe case of hermorrhoids, and a tubercular antrum; also of a rupture for which a truss had been worn for several years. None of these healings had impressed me, as I was much devoted to medical laws and medicine; but in the depth of my troubles, a gradual willingness to "listen" caused me to look into the textbook.
One day in 1904, when I was on an outing, and was as usual suffering from my eyes, which had given me much trouble during that year, there came to my thought the statement, All is Mind, and the subsequent thought, My eyes cannot make my head hurt. I accepted this message of truth, and upon returning home I was entirely free. A recent examination showed that this healing remains complete, although at the time I did not realize that I had been healed. After a few weeks I attended a Christian Science Thanksgiving service with eagerness and joy, and some days later I became conscious of the fact that God, infinite good, had healed me through Christian Science. The stomach trouble, rheumatism, and some other conditions which had caused severe suffering, were also healed. The greatest cause for gratitude, however, is the spiritual benefit received through the healing of sin, the gaining of more love and patience, living closer to God, and learning more of His perfect creation.
