Unselfed Love
When answering the question as to which was the great commandment, Christ Jesus, the Exemplar, stressed the importance of loving God supremely and of loving one another. He said: "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself."
The world today is in great need of true neighborliness or brotherly love. In the hearts of men and women weary of the disappointments of material seeking there is a longing for more than merely material things—a yearning for the tender, compassionate love of Christ. The Master said, "I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of truth." This promise has been fulfilled through the advent of Christian Science, which is indeed the "Comforter," bringing regeneration and healing of sin, disease, sorrow, business difficulties—discord of every nature—to thousands of men and women throughout the world.
Through her purity of thought and unselfed love for humanity Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, was enabled to give this great gift to a waiting world. Of her marvelous work our beloved Leader humbly writes (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 247), "The little that I have accomplished has all been done through love,—self-forgetful, patient, unfaltering tenderness." Through the study of this Science, the earnest student proves his love for God by expressing that spiritual love in his daily contact with his fellow men. Kindly deeds, however trifling, express true neighborliness. Often a word of cheer encourages another to make a fresh start in the right direction. In "Miscellaneous Writings" we may read (p. 107): "More love is the great need of mankind. A pure affection, concentric, forgetting self, forgiving wrongs and forestalling them, should swell the lyre of human love."
