My introduction to Christian Science came while I was...
My introduction to Christian Science came while I was serving in the capacity of a graduate medical nurse. I witnessed a painless childbirth and learned of the healing of an exophthalmic goiter of a member of this household. About seven months later I was called upon to take care of a child who was suffering from a severe earache, and running a high temperature. I recalled a relative saying, "The only thing that will relieve that child of one of those spells is a Christian Science treatment." However, I turned a deaf ear to this and continued to follow the doctor's instructions, but no relief was obtained. After a turbulent day, a member of the family came home from work, and seeing the condition of the child asked my permission to call a practitioner. I replied that if Christian Science could relieve the suffering, I was willing, for I had exhausted all my means. Much to my surprise, in five minutes the child was sleeping peacefully and her little body felt normal. This was startling but adequate proof of the healing efficacy of Christian Science.
Since that time I have had many healings and have also witnessed many, of pneumonia, ptomaine poisoning, blood poisoning, broken bones, sprained ankle, toothache, severe colds, and others too numerous to mention. For twenty-seven years my sister was separated from our family, due to the loss of our parents when we were small children. All efforts to locate her seemed futile, and earnest prayers were unanswered until Christian Science was applied to the case. One day, after accepting a very humble position with small remuneration, I asked God to show me what it could be that kept us apart. The answer was then very clear—resentment. As I pondered over this uncovering it was evident that for years I had been resentful about our separation and toward those connected with it. I knew that the only antidote for this was love, and the situation could be healed only by pouring in an abundance of it. Freeing myself of this resentment I was enabled clearly to see that God had never caused that separation, that in Mind there is no separation, and that God knows where each one of His ideas dwells. I thought, He will bring us all together, and I do not need to be concerned as to when or how. I then realized that my willingness to do the work divine Love had pointed out for me had given me clearer vision, and that the healing had taken place. With this assurance I dismissed it from thought. About six weeks later a letter from a brother informed me that our sister had been located on the other side of the continent. Since then we have had a joyous reunion, and she has also had many proofs of Christian Science healing.
I am deeply grateful for our beloved Leader, whose unselfish devotion to the Cause was proof of her love for mankind. For the blessings received through membership in The Mother Church and a branch church and from class instruction, I am truly grateful; also for our Church Manual, which is our daily guide, and for the practitioners and students who are ready to lend a helping hand. My sincere desire is for a deeper understanding of Christian Science that I may help others as I have been helped.
