About eleven years ago, while at a resort where I had...
About eleven years ago, while at a resort where I had gone seeking health, I was suddenly severely stricken. An excellent physician of high reputation gave me a thorough examination, and pronounced my case autointoxication. He prescribed no particular remedy, but among other things he cautioned me never again to eat certain foods. Having myself studied medicine, this verdict produced a great deal of fear. Upon arriving home I consulted a physician, who gave me treatment. Subsequently I went to several of the best-known health resorts in this country and to a well-known sanitarium. My condition did not improve, and I became greatly emaciated, exceedingly nervous, afflicted with lapse of memory, and was unable to sleep.
Just as I was about to start to another health resort, Christian Science was recommended to me by one who was not a Christian Scientist. I knew nothing whatsoever of this religion, but I immediately consulted a practitioner, purchased the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and devoted myself to the earnest study of this Science. In about five weeks the light suddenly broke upon my thought, the fetters which seemed to bind me fell off, and I experienced a wonderful illumination and was free. Since that time I have had excellent health; I eat whatever I like, rest well at all times, and I have regained my normal weight. On page 425 of Science and Health we read, "Correct material belief by spiritual understanding, and Spirit will form you anew." This passage has been a beacon light for me.
Although I became an enthusiastic student of Christian Science, there have been many times when the upward path seemed thorny and the going very rough; but through persistence I have found this Science always sufficient to solve my problems. One of the most tenacious difficulties which I had to overcome was foreboding fear. Often it seemed impossible to go on, but always some thought from our textbook or the Bible, something heard at a Christian Science lecture, or some spoken word would bring relief. Something seemed to say, Do not tell anyone of this fear; what would people think if they knew? It is so unmanly. Finally, in desperation, I told this to an experienced practitioner, who showed me how to think correctly about this phase of error, and from that very day the fear began to subside.
