Spiritual Necessities
In the study of a foreign language, it has been found that to be able to converse fluently one must learn to think in that language. The teachings of Christian Science lead us to learn the new tongue spoken of in the Bible, and to think from a spiritual standpoint, so that we can enjoy its benefits and blessings. It is a spiritual language, knowledge of which must be acquired with study and application, even as in learning a language other than one's mother tongue one must study and apply what one learns. The necessity for changing the character of our thinking, if we expect to profit by the teaching of Christian Science, will be readily understood when we consider that without constant training in the right direction human consciousness stores up thoughts of sin, disease, poverty, and death—misinformation which comes to it through the medium of the five senses.
The daily study and use of Christian Science begin at once to eliminate wrong beliefs and replace them with ideas of divine Love, Life, and Truth. And individual consciousness is purified proportionately as it clings to the pure and true. Christian Science is exact Science. Its divine Principle must be learned and applied if one is to guide one's self and others through the maze of human perplexities.
On page 355 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy says, "Let the harmonious and true sense of Life and being take possession of human consciousness." The "harmonious and true sense" of being is acquired only by the constant use of divine ideas—love, unselfishness, mercy, justice, purity, temperance, patience, gentleness, kindness, humility, gratitude. These are expressions of Truth, concerning which there are no complexities. Truth is simple, and easily comprehended; but the demonstration of it requires consecrated endeavor. The Master said, "Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life." Obedience to this command should be the objective of every student of Christian Science.
