When Christian Science was presented to me, I had been...

When Christian Science was presented to me, I had been seeking for several years to find out why Christ Jesus' teaching could not be proved as of old. As I read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, my questions were answered. From the beginning I loved this teaching and endeavored to put it into practice. This Science has brought great good into my life, in business as well as in the healing of sickness.

The splendid health of our son is due to divine help, the understanding of which has been gained through the reading of Science and Health. When he was ten years old, the boy was playing one morning in a public square with some other children. When he went out to play again in the afternoon, one of the children was lying in wait for him and let drive an arrow into his eye just as he opened the door of the house. Hearing his cries, I brought him into the house. The eye was bleeding freely. I washed it, but he could not open it. He lay down on a sofa, and although I was very much frightened at the thought of what might result, I read the ninety-first Psalm aloud, and repeated it several times until the child became quiet. Gradually I too became calm, and the verse, "Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day," now took on a marvelous meaning. Since we were living in a strange city, I had a telegram sent to a friend who is a practitioner, and then, with my thought at rest, I was able to realize the truth. As my husband had only a slight understanding of Christian Science, he asked on the following day that we consult an oculist. The eye was ugly to look at, and the oculist was unable to say whether the sight had been lost. He advised that we keep the child lying down for three days in order to avoid what is commonly called a hemorrhage. He also prescribed some drops for the eye, but the boy refused to use them, knowing that he was cared for by divine Science. At the end of three days our son was able to distinguish a shadow; two days later he could make out forms; and on the seventh day the oculist was amazed to find that the boy could see as well as before. The oculist advised the wearing of glasses in order to relieve the eye of fatigue. We bought them to satisfy the boy's father, who was still fearful; but the next day the child inadvertently broke them, and we did not buy another pair.

Our gratitude was boundless; and we still feel very grateful to the practitioner who helped us, also to the divine power which surrounds and restores us. Our son did not want to see the boy who had hurt him, until he was healed. Through the teachings of Christian Science we learned to forgive and love this child, who has become quite devoted to our son.
