The truth of Christian Science was first proved to me...
The truth of Christian Science was first proved to me during a long period of illness which my younger brother experienced. After trying many physicians without result, he sought help in Christian Science and was healed of a number of his ailments. I did not come to this Science for physical healing at that time, although I desired to understand how Jesus taught and practiced it. Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 313), "Jesus of Nazareth was the most scientific man that ever trod the globe." Again, on page 320, she writes, "'In my flesh shall I see God,' gives a profound idea of the divine power to heal the ills of the flesh, and encourages mortals to hope in Him who healeth all our diseases."
I started to read and study the textbook during the year 1917, and I gained understanding rapidly. After I had used medicines all my life, it was a great revelation to me to know that God, Mind, is the only medicine we need. The passage in the Bible began to be understandable where it says that God "healeth all thy diseases." Our Children had influenza shortly after I became interested in Christian Science. The first one taken with the disease had attended the Christian Science Sunday School for a short period of time and had gained enough understanding to heal herself almost immediately. The others came down one after another, the last one being a young baby. All five were about their activities in two weeks. One teaching in a public school and several attending school were completely healed without any after effects. I can never be grateful enough for that experience. It taught me that God is the only staff on which to lean in sickness as in health. I remember that my eldest boy helped me throw away all the medicines on which we had so long relied. We were never again tempted to use any.
With the aid of practitioners, we have had quick healings of so-called children's diseases. Appendicitis and heart and head troubles were overcome. A healing of a broken arm, including the setting of the bones without material aid, was experienced, so that the child was away from school only three days and the healing was complete in two weeks. An extreme case of poisoning, deafness, hemorrhages, and many other phases of physical disorder have been overcome with the application of the truth.
